My Summer image for the home page is one of a series I have been working on recently of images of roots of trees in local forests. I have assembled the best of them into a new series called Ballet Roots, which is now posted as a new Series Gallery.

March 22, 2017

My Spring image for the home page was taken in May 2006 in the lovely village of Castelluccio di Norcia, adjacent to the Monti Sibillini National Park in Umbria, Italy. I recently learned that the roads leading to it and the village itself were severely damaged during the devastaing earthquakes that struck the Norcia region last year. I hope that the roads will soon be open and that many of the 150 residents will be able to rebuild.

Also, I will be participating in the annual Newton Open Studios on April 1 and 2 this year. I will be showing at the "Hyde and Seek," location 32 on the brochure, at 180 Hyde Street, along with Susan Tornheim, who does felt and fabric work, Kendra Tornheim, jeweler, and Maurice Laurence, another landscape photographer.

For details and to download a printable guide go to Newton Open Studios Mailing or newtonopenstudios.org

Response to the pre-order offer for my new book of black and white photos has been excellent.

February 23, 2015

The Winter Print of the Season is belatedly now up. This winter didn't seem like winter through most of January, while we were getting rain instead of snow. But that all changed with four major snow storms (two of them officially blizzards) in four weeks. The new image was taken after the second big storm.

I do plan to update the site with new galleries from time to time, usually more often than once every three months. I am working on some new projects which should result in new galleries soon.

June 28, 2011

It's been a while since I've had a chance to update the website. I have decided that it is more realistic for me to post a new image on the main page four times a year instead of every month. For that reason, I am changing the name of my periodic special from "Print of the Month" to "Print of the Season."

For this Summer's offering I have selected a print of two maple trees on a hilltop in Amherst, Massachusetts. Prints will be available at the special price until some time in September, when I will post a Print of the Season for Fall.

I do plan to update the site with new galleries from time to time, usually more often than once every three months.

April 4, 2011

As sometimes happens, I was too busy to post a new Print of the Month for March.

For April I have selected one of the four images that were shown last month at the Upstream Gallery in Dobbs Ferry, New york.

It is number 19 from the Subway series, taken a few years ago at the 190th Street subway station of the New York transit system, while the station was beginning renovation.

January 26, 2011

The opening reception for my Tar Gazing exhibit has been postponed to Friday, February 4, 2011, from 6:30-8:30 pm. A snow storm forced the postponement.

There will also be a closing reception (which I do expect to attend) on Sunday, February 27 from 2 to 5 pm.

October 5, 2010

September 9, 2010

The September Print of the Month is one of 40 signs making up a new Series Gallery that I call "Consequences."

Three of my photographs are now showing in an exhibit at the Brookline, Massachusetts public library that runs through the end of September.

The exhibit features samples from each of the artists who will have solo shows at the Brookline Arts Center during the next two years. My road tar images will be on display from mid-January through February, 2011.

August 1, 2010

The August Print of the Month was taken in the wild interior of Cold Spring Park in Newton, MA, a few summers ago. It shows the sun highlighting part of a tangle of vegetation.

There are now two new galleries listed under landscape galleries, images scanned from slides from my first two trips to the Canadian Rockies in 1977 and 1987.

Enjoy browsing, and look for more galleries soon.

July 14, 2010

Well, it's done, at least for now. The whole website has been reorganized, so now I can go back to doing some photography.

Instead of black-and-white galleries vs. color galleries, I have grouped them as "series galleries" and "landscape galleries." Each series is devoted to one type of subject, such as sand, road tar, or stains on walls; and each landscape gallery is from one location. Some of the locations I have returned to more than once, so I expect to have additional galleries up for them soon. As I was scanning old slides I came across a couple of interesting shots of the Jeffrey Pine on the top of Sentinel Dome in Yosemite National Park, first photographed in 1867 by Carleton Watkins and much later by Ansel Adams. Wikipedia tells me that the tree died in the drought of 1976 and finally collapsed in 2003. My first shot was of the living tree in 1971 and my second is of the dead carcass in 1991. I'll have galleries of the Sierras from those two years up soon.

There are now four new galleries accessible directly from the home page. "Favorites" and "Sampler" each have some of my own favorites from several of the series or landscape galleries. All of my "Prints of the Month" are now gathered in a top-level gallery, as are the current calendars, and a new gallery of "Vintage Prints", consisting of images from my film and darkroom days.

Some of the older galleries have been expanded with new images. At the bottom of each gallery is a link to a page that gives some information "about this gallery."

Enjoy browsing, and look for more galleries soon.

July 2, 2010

The process of redesigning the entire website continues, and I expect to have a major reorganization complete by the end of this month. There are still a few cosmetic glitches in the new look, which I expect to have ironed out in a few days.
Meanwhile, there is a new "old" image for the July Print of the Month. This was taken during my first workshop with Minor White, using a 4x5" Calumet view camera and Kodak Plus-X sheet film.

June 13, 2010

I am in the process of redesigning the entire website. The first stage is complete, providing a new overall look. Soon I expect to do further reorganization and simplification of the galleries.
The Print of the Month for June is one of three of mine that appears with a Merit Award in the August (annual B&W Portfolio) issue of Black & White Magazine, now on newstands.
This image was from Plum Island and appears as image GS16 in my Sand Moods gallery.

May 31, 2010

This image was from Plum Island and appears as image GS16 in my Sand Moods gallery.

"Now for something completely different." The new Print of the Month for May is a departure from my usual fare. I hope you enjoy it.
Some of my photos will appear in the June issue of Black&White Magazine. CORRECTION: These will be in the B&W Portfolio Issue, which should be on newsstands the first week of June.

March 6, 2010

I have added a new gallery of abstract color images called 190.

March 3, 2010

The opening reception is this Saturday, February 6, 2010, from 1:00 to 5:00 pm. For more information and directions, see the gallery website at gallery.hallmark.edu.

Last month I started showing scanned slides from my film days. This month I have been scanning black-and-white prints and negatives from the film and darkroom era. I have recently begun scanning old negatives and slides from my pre-digital days, and the first results of this effort are now up on my blog and this website. I have also finally added a new post to my blog, describing the 1974 Iceland trip. Of course you may find more information in the "About Iceland 1974" page.

*** Order calendars through the Contact Me page. ***

September 3, 2009

I'm a couple of days late, but the September Print of the Month is finally up. It was taken on August 28, so it is guaranteed fresh.

I have posted a new black-and-white gallery, Road Tar II, continuing and expanding on the theme of the original Road Tar gallery.

My exhibit at NewTV was quite successful and has now come down.

The sorting of old Kodachromes continues.

July 31, 2009

The August Print of the Month is now up.

My exhibit continues through August at the NewTV Studios. See below for details.

I have been sorting through old Kodachrome slides, selecting the best to have them scanned. Soon I expect to add several new galleries from those slides. I will likely include some from Iceland in 1974, from the Sierra Nevadas in California in 1971 and 1991, from the Canadian Rockies in 1977 and 1987, and perhaps also some from Norway in 1996 and Grand Canyon in 1984. In addition, I have started writing some essays on seeing photographically. I will post them on my blog from time to time.

June 30, 2009

Oops! CORRECTION: I listed the address incorrectly here for the NewTV Studios Exhibit. The show is now up through August at the NewTV studio and gallery on Easy Street, off Needham St. (not Highland Ave., as I had said earlier) in Newton, Massachusetts. The hours are Monday Friday, 10:00 am 9:00 pm, Saturday, 10:00 am 5:00 pm, and Sunday, 12:00 pm 5:00 pm.

The July Print of the Month is now up.

June 14, 2009

The party, er, reception, was great, and the band was right on, IMHO. What I saw of the tape looks very good, too, so I'll post a link here once I have a copy. Probably on YouTube as well. As I said earlier, the show is now up through August at the NewTV studio and gallery on Easy Street, off Needham St. in Newton, Massachusetts. Come by if you are in the neighborhood.

June 12, 2009

Tomorrow (June 13) is the opening reception of my show with Ellen Fisher at the New TV Studios in Newton. The reception is from 5 to 7:30, with music by Shir Madness, the klezmer band in which I play flute, starting at around 6 pm. The show is now up through August at the NewTV studio and gallery on Easy Street, off Needham St. in Newton, Massachusetts. There have been notices in the Newton Tab and Boston Globe, and the Globe will run an interview with me this Sunday in the West Suburban edition. If the band's performance is up to our usual standards, it will probably be shown on our Local Access TV sometime in the future.

May 29, 2009

I have finally added two galleries from my recent trip to Utah. One is in color and the other in Black and White. Although Utah is an incredibly colorful state, I do feel that some of the images work better in black and white.

June's Print of the Month is now up as well.

Many of the Utah images will be included in the exhibit this summer at New TV in Newton. See my notes from May 13 (below) for details.

May 13, 2009

Several images from my Utah trip as well as some Plum Island sand images and two Newton landscapes will be shown this weekend at Newton's Open Studios, at the NewTV studio and gallery on Easy Street, off Needham St. in Newton, Massachusetts. The show, accompanied by works of Ellen Fisher, will be viewable on Saturday and Sunday from 11 to 5. I will be there from 2 to 5 each day.

The show will also be up in June, July, and August, with a reception Saturday, June 13, from 5 to 7:30, with music by Shir Madness, the klezmer band in which I play flute, starting at around 6 pm. I hope to see some of you there.

May 6, 2009

I have recently returned from a two-week photo trip to Southern Utah, including Zion, Bryce Canyon, and Capitol Reef National Parks and Escalante-Grand Staircase National Monument.
It was a wonderful experience, and I expect to post a new gallery or two from the trip later this month.

In the meantime, the May "Print of the Month" is now up (a few days late). It is one of my initial black-and-white favorites from the trip.

March 29, 2009

The website has undergone a few minor tweaks (as usual.)

The April "Print of the Month" is now up.

I will be away for much of April, photographing in Southwestern Utah for the first time. My travels will include Zion, Bryce, and Capitol Reef National Parks as well as excursions into the Escalante-Grand Staircase National Monument. I am especially indebted to photographer Harvey Halpern for invaluable assistance in planning this trip.

February 27, 2009

The website has undergone one more revamping, most of which is "under the hood." The navigation panel exists now in a single, separate "included" file, so that if and when changes are needed, they will only need to be made to a single file instead of on all of the many pages that contain a navigation panel. This change was prompted by my own discovery that many of the links worked on some pages but not on others.

The March "Print of the Month" is now up.

One of my prints has been selected to appear in a juried exhibit called "White, Black, and Shades of Gray" at the South Shore Arts Center in Cohasset, Massachusetts, The show runs from March 6 through April 19, 2009. For more information visit the South Shore Art Center website.

More refinements to the website design have been implemented. In addition, the mysterious image in the upper left corner of each page now is a link to a page that shows a larger version and explains why I chose this image as my "icon".

The February "Print of the Month" is now up.

This Sunday, February 1, 2009, from noon to 6 pm I will be participating in an Open Studio event with New Song Art Co-op in Newton Massachusetts. For information about the event and the ten artists, go to newsongart.com.

The navigation bar doesn't waste so much space now, so it should behave a little better on smaller screens. The arrow keys can now substitute for "Prev", "Index", and "Next" when you are viewing an individual image on any gallery, exhibit, or calendar. This seems to work in Opera, Firefox, Safari and Internet Explorer. I have not yet tested it in Ipod, etc. I've made a few other cosmetic changes here and there (separating Black-and-White Galleries from Color Galleries, and rearranging them, for instance.) I have reprocessed the large images for the web and made them a little larger. There is one more new gallery, and some of the others have added more images.

More changes will come soon. Maybe even some more photographs.

I have now learned enough CSS to make some improvements in my website, thanks to numerous helpful suggestions from viewers. For one thing, navigation should be somewhat cleaner and easier, and pages should display better on a variety of screens (although they are best viewed on a landscape-format, color-calibrated screen of 21" or larger).

A new "Print of the Month" is now available, as shown on the home page (click the "Print of the Month" link for details.)

Four new galleries have been added, three in Galleries -- Color and one in Galleries -- B&W, and a couple of new images to existing galleries. I have redone the "About Me" page.

Finally, I have added a "Credits and Links" page, where I mention a few of the websites and individuals that I have found especially helpful. And I expect to add still more content soon.

Now I'd better stop doing web coding and get out to do some photography!

Please come back frequently, and tell your friends to visit.

I have designed my website so that I can add content more easily and more often.

In addition, I expect to offer a new "Print of the Month" at a special discount price at the start of every new month.

The new website now has two calendars (for 2009), three recent exhibits, and nine galleries, including three in black and white and six in color. All images from the old site will appear here as well.
